Once the first shoots are about 4-6 inches long, comes the first (of
a number) of treatments. In this case it is against Oidium (Powdery Mildew).
This is a relatively mild treatment that is usually mixed with Caldo
Burdalés. Caldo Burdalés (literally Bordeaux Soup) is
basically a harmless blue copper sulphate solution that is a "contact"
treatment. This means that it is not absorbed into the plant at all, is
washed off by the rain, but that on contact with the leaves it is an effective
anti-mildew treatment.
Now that the vines are so small, spraying is a two-person job, each with
a high pressure pistol directed at the vines. When the vines have more foliage,
spraying is more automatic using the large fan on the back of the trailer/tank
to spray the liquid on both sides simultaneously. The same system could
be used now, but it would be very wasteful.
