Alella
is a small (and shrinking) area just to the north of Barcelona, largely threatened
by the expansion of the housing estates in what is a prized real estate area.
The quality wines in the D.O. are dominated by Marques de Alella / Parxet, and
will be joined in 2002 by Alta Alella wines, Josep Maria Pujol-Busquets' own
new cellar. The primary characteristic of this area is the Sauló soil,
a sandy granitic soil with very low organic content.

In general Alella enjoys a gentle Mediterranean climate,
although in the interior of the region it suffers winter frosts. Despite
the average annual rainfall figure, much of this falls in heavy thunderstorms
in September and October, making the rest of the year quite dry. |
